Oracle iAS upgrade to 11g/12c – the WebLogic license trap

When upgrading to 11g/12c in Oracle iAS applications, the infrastructure will now include WebLogic Server. It is easy to mistakenly think that the existing licenses can be ported across with no change – wrong, well partially…..

The default WebLogic Server installation will require an additional Standard, Enterprise or WebLogic Suite license which you can purchase from your local Oracle vendor. If you do not need the extra features on offer but simply want similar functionality to your 9i/10g iAS then you can use the WebLogic License which is included in the following product licenses:

  • Oracle Internet Application Server Standard Edition
  • Oracle Internet Application Server Standard Edition One
  • Oracle Internet Application Server Enterprise Edition
  • Oracle Forms and Reports
  • Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition

WebLogic Basic is a restricted use license, review the documentation to ensure that it is right for your environment. For more details see Annex A of http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E15523_01/doc.1111/e14860.pdf or the equivalent document for the version being installed.

To install WebLogic Basic you simply need to deselect Web 2.0 HTTP Pub-Sub Server on a custom install (enabled by default). Selecting Weblogic Basic is made much easier in the 12c OUI.

Then continue the installation as normal.

I hope this helps someone save a few bucks. Please contact us if you need more detail.
